KIND Weekly: Behind the scenes of Act 11

Aloha Reader,

This week we're going behind the scenes on Act 11 (Senate Bill (SB) 2471), spreading the word on Saturday's voter registration event, and keeping the postcards moving.

  • Behind the scenes of Act 11
  • Register voters this Saturday, September 26
  • Postcarding Thursday at Gypsea Gelato
  • Save the date: October 17
  • County Bill 170 and data centers on the Big Island

Behind the scenes of Act 11

This year, Hawaiʻi passed Act 11 (SB2471), the first law in the nation to directly counter Citizens United. Did you know that one of us set it in motion? Back in November 2025, Maryellen, a Kona Indivisible (KIND) leader, shared a Substack essay by Robert Reich on how to counter Citizens United, and that single forward eventually led to Act 11 becoming law. Full story here.

We're thrilled that she joined Savannah, Tina-Marie, and Martina, also KIND leaders, on their podcast, Resist with Joy, to share her story of activism and more. It's a cool one, don't miss it. Watch here.

Register voters this Saturday

Every one of us has to put in the effort to push this midterm election to a decisive result, one where the wins and margins cannot be disputed. Not only a blue wave, but a tsunami, as in make it too big to rig. That starts with registering as many people as possible, so we're glad the League of Women Voters of Hawaiʻi County is teaming up with Hawaiʻi County Elections for a voter registration day. Share this with your family, friends, and wider network.

When: Saturday, September 26, 2026, 9 am- 4 pm

  • Hilo: KTA Puainako Shopping Center
  • Kona: KTA Kona and Kona Coast Shopping Center
  • Naʻalehu: Naʻalehu Methodist Church
  • Pahoa: Mālama Market
  • Waimea: KTA Waimea

Postcarding at Gypsea Gelato Thursday

The midterms are almost here but there's still time to help get out the vote in swing states that will determine control of Congress.

We’re writing postcards to Michigan this week. Michigan is a key state with some House seats and a Senate seat that are critical to a successful blue wave. The Republicans are hoping to flip a Senate seat from Democrat to Republican, but Democrat Abdul El-Sayed currently has a slight lead in the polls. We need to rally Democrats to go out and vote to keep this Senate seat blue.

Michigan also has four Congressional seats that are being hotly contested. Again, high turnout will be key to taking these House seats.

TAKE ACTION: Join us at Gypsea Gelato and keep the cards moving.

When: Thursday, September 24, 2026, 1:30-3:00 pm
Where: Gypsea Gelato, 79-7491 Hawaiʻi Belt Road, Kealakekua, HI 96750 - Register here

Save the date for our next Sunday potluck and postcard party at Kahalu'u Beach Park on October 4. We'll be writing postcards to get out the vote in Iowa. Iowa’s Senate race has flipped from a likely Republican win to a true toss-up in recent polling. Turnout will be the key to flipping this Senate seat and potentially two Iowa House seats blue.

Prefer to write from home? Request a packet here.

You also have dozens of opportunities to phonebank or textbank for key candidates. Find details on our events page.

Save the date: October 17

We're excited to see you again on the streets for a fabulous event.

No Dictators returns October 17, 4:00 pm, on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, south of Henry Street, behind the Mormon Temple. This round also doubles as a food drive for Aloha Latinos.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Register here.

County Bill 170 and data centers on the Big Island

Data centers have been a hot topic nationally, and even our county is considering how to address this issue.

Hawai'i County Bill 170 is intended to close a zoning loophole that could let industrial-scale data centers pass as ordinary data processing facilities. It would clarify that data centers are not a permitted use in the county. Residents testifying on the bill (including KIND members) emphasized that an island with our resource limits isn't suited to accommodate data centers and their water and power demands. The bill is currently with the planning commissions for further review. Read more from Hawaiʻi Public Radio.

Have a wonderful week!

Warmest Aloha
Sam & the KIND Leadership Team

Aloha Reader, This year, voters in three countries have shown the world that strongman politics can be beaten at the ballot box. In April, Hungarians turned out in record numbers to end Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power, even after JD Vance flew in to campaign for him. And just this Sunday, Serbia’s student-led movement ousted Aleksandar Vučić after 12 years, while Brazilians chose Lula over Flávio Bolsonaro, Trump’s ally and the son of a former president convicted of plotting a coup. None of...

Aloha Reader, What a weekend 🤩🤩. Hundreds of us filled the highway in Kona on Saturday to say No Dictators: Hands Off My Vote, part of 8,400 people rallying across the islands. Now the ballots are in our mailboxes, and the most important thing any of us can do this week is simple: vote, then make sure everyone we know votes too. Election Day is two weeks out, but in Hawaiʻi and many other states, voting is already underway. Early turnout is running high in swing states like Georgia, North...

Aloha Reader, For more than a year, millions of Americans have joined together around one simple message: this country has no kings. Power doesn’t belong to billionaires, strongmen, or politicians who think the rules don’t apply to them. It rests with the people, as long as we exercise it. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, from 4:00-5:00 pm, we put that power to work with a peaceful sign-waving protest on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, south of Henry Street, behind the Mormon temple. Kona’s rally is...
