KIND Weekly: Make it too big to rig

Aloha Reader,

Election Day is five weeks away, and the best thing any of us can do now is help get out the vote in swing states, then vote early and bring your friends and family along. Since last Sunday's Indivisible Hawaiʻi Statewide Network (IHSN) newsletter covered the big picture, we're keeping this one short with five ways to show up this week.

Voting in Hawaiʻi is safe and secure. If you have concerns, we recommend the webinar Worried about Election Interference? Our goal is to motivate as many people as possible to cast a ballot, so the results are too big to rig.

In this issue

  • Postcarding at Gypsea Gelato Thursday
  • Pop-up rally Friday
  • KIND Sunday Social: postcards and potluck
  • Post-Ironman coastal cleanup
  • The next No Dictators protest: Hands Off My Vote

Postcarding at Gypsea Gelato Thursday

We only have a few weeks left to get postcards out to help drive turnout in swing states. Research confirms that handwritten postcards are an effective, cost-efficient tool for increasing voter turnout, particularly in tight races and among infrequent and younger voters. Hand written postcards can increase turnout up to 2%, and that could be decisive in tight races (and all the critical races this year are tight.)

Please come out and help us in the final push in October.

WHEN: Thursday, October 1, 1:30-3:00 pm

WHERE: Gypsea Gelato, 79-7491 Hawaiʻi Belt Rd, Kealakekua, HI 96750

TAKE ACTION: Register here

Prefer to write from home? Request a packet.

You'll also find dozens of phone and text banks for key candidates on our events page.

Pop-Up Rally Friday

We know you have plenty to say, so let's gather and remind our community what's at stake: voting rights, health care, gas prices, the lies and lawsuits, and money poured into wars.

WHEN: Friday, October 2, 4:00-5:00 pm

WHERE: Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, south of Henry Street, mauka of the Mormon Temple (our usual rally spot).

PARKING: Use one of the larger lots on Henry Street. Do not park on the shoulder of Queen Kaʻahumanu.

We'll have a few large signs, but please bring your own highlighting the issue you care about most. It gets hot out there, so pack water and a hat 😊

TAKE ACTION: RSVP on Mobilize - it helps us reach you if plans change at the last minute.

Sunday Social: Postcards and Potluck

Join us for our monthly social, with postcard writing at 3:00 pm and a potluck to follow. We'll be reaching voters in flippable districts across the country in support of Blue Wave candidates.

It's been a few months since we've had a social event. Please come out and join us and let's celebrate all the hard work we've done so far this year and talk about how we can make a final push for the midterms.

WHEN: Sunday, October 4, postcarding at 3:00 pm, potluck around 4:00 pm

WHERE: Kahaluʻu Beach Park Pavilion, 78-6702 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

TAKE ACTION: Save your spot

Post-Ironman coastal cleanup

Every October, Ironman athletes from around the world race through Kona, and afterward our shoreline needs some care. Help KIND give back to the community by joining Clean Rewards as they celebrate nine years of cleaning the coastline of Hawaiʻi Island. We'll share more info next week.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Sunday, October 11, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

The next No Dictators protest: Hands Off My Vote

No Dictators is shaping up to be one of the largest protests on our island, across the state, and nationwide. It doubles as a food drive for Aloha Latinos, so bring something to donate. Cash donations are gladly accepted too.

When: Saturday, October 17, 4:00-5:00 pm at our usual spot

We need volunteers on the day, especially for the parking and traffic crew. If you can help, please reply to this email with the best way to contact you.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Sign up and invite your friends.

We know this is a marathon (in Kona terms, an Ironman), and we feel lucky that so many of you keep showing up. You understand what we're up against, and we're grateful for every one of you.

See you Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.

Warmest Aloha
Sam & the KIND Leadership Team

Aloha Reader, This year, voters in three countries have shown the world that strongman politics can be beaten at the ballot box. In April, Hungarians turned out in record numbers to end Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power, even after JD Vance flew in to campaign for him. And just this Sunday, Serbia’s student-led movement ousted Aleksandar Vučić after 12 years, while Brazilians chose Lula over Flávio Bolsonaro, Trump’s ally and the son of a former president convicted of plotting a coup. None of...

Aloha Reader, What a weekend 🤩🤩. Hundreds of us filled the highway in Kona on Saturday to say No Dictators: Hands Off My Vote, part of 8,400 people rallying across the islands. Now the ballots are in our mailboxes, and the most important thing any of us can do this week is simple: vote, then make sure everyone we know votes too. Election Day is two weeks out, but in Hawaiʻi and many other states, voting is already underway. Early turnout is running high in swing states like Georgia, North...

Aloha Reader, For more than a year, millions of Americans have joined together around one simple message: this country has no kings. Power doesn’t belong to billionaires, strongmen, or politicians who think the rules don’t apply to them. It rests with the people, as long as we exercise it. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, from 4:00-5:00 pm, we put that power to work with a peaceful sign-waving protest on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, south of Henry Street, behind the Mormon temple. Kona’s rally is...
