No Dictators Recap, Breaking News, and This Week's To-Do List

Aloha Reader,

Mahalo nui loa to all 1,500 entrants in our No Dictators 'open swim' on Saturday 😀😁. The rain did not stop us from celebrating the America we love. We all felt the joy and enthusiasm.

Thank you to everyone who stood side-by-side or drove by honking and waving their signs đŸ€©đŸ€©...we even made Rachel Maddow’s event coverage on national news. Congratulations!

Rachel called out our No Dictators message (instead of No Kings), and our Congresswoman Jill Tokuda gave an excellent explanation—check it out here.

Saturday's great turnout creates an amazing split screen: On one side, 7 million peaceful protesters nationally, 0 arrests, no violence (except shrapnel falling on I-5 in San Diego). On the other hand, frantic attempts by the Republican leadership to paint the best of us as anti-American, domestic terrorists, “enemies within.” The MAGA loyalists are making an enormous mistake. Successful propaganda depends on media control, which they don’t have. Instead, they look small, scared, and silly.

Don't get distracted by MAGA. We are fighting APATHY.

Of course, they do control an echo chamber and an algorithmic bubble. And local trolls have started to emerge, too. Please don’t feed them. Let them rant into the wind about the No-Parking signs along Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. We will stand our ground.

Our real enemy is apathy. It’s no secret that Hawaiʻi is basically a one-party state, meaning the real action is in the primaries. In Kona last year, primary turnout was below 30% of registered voters. Let’s say that more clearly: 70% of already registered voters did not bother to return ballots. That may have been harmless before, but now is the time for everyone to find their voice.

The Momentum is shifting

Which leads us to momentum and another split screen. Watch Indivisible's national leaders discuss this here. MAGA is crumbling. The White House East Wing demolition image says more than 1,000 words. The loyalists are less trusted, less popular, and more defensive every week of the government shutdown.

At the same time, our pro-democracy movement gets larger, more visible, and more influential. Over 7 million Americans showed up nationally, and about 22,000 across Hawaiʻi. These incredible numbers will motivate us to keep pushing forward.

West Hawaii Today did not have a reporter available, so enjoy this great recap on Hawaii Public Radio.

#SpecialSessionNow - Take Action

We need to use that power and influence to make real change, so we continue to call for a Special Session Now in the Hawaiʻi Legislature!
What’s at stake: if the State Legislature convenes this November, our representatives can prevent a year of harm by enacting laws to

  • No Secret Police
  • No Healthcare Cuts
  • No Stripping Food Aid, and
  • No Secret Committees.

Urgent request: please call and email your elected officials now. Everything you need is on our #SpecialSessionNow campaign webpage.

BREAKING NEWS at the County level!

We continue advocating at the County level.

  • BIG WIN TODAY: At 10.45 AM this morning, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the Hawaii County Council unanimously adopted Resolution 320, “A Resolution Expressing Support For Due Process And The Protection Of Constitutional Rights For All Residents Of The County Of Hawai'i And Affirming The County's Commitment To Multiculturalism And Its Immigrant Heritage.”
We had submitted testimony in favor while proposing amendments to strengthen the resolution's requests for the Mayor and Police Chief. Our work matters and makes a difference. đŸ’„đŸ’„
  • The Police Commission meets in Hilo on Friday, October 24, 2025. We will again present testimony on the selection process for the permanent Police Chief.
  • Last week, we had an excellent virtual meeting with (Interim) Police Chief Reed Mahuna and Assistant Chief Sherry Bird regarding the police and protecting residents’ civil rights. Watch the discussion on YouTube.

November Get-Togethers

We apologize, but we have to cancel our November 2, 2025, Postcard Party and Beach Social at Kahalu’u Beach Park. These fun events will resume on the first Sunday in December (12/07/2025).

However, two other November events are happening, and we hope you’ll attend:

  • Aloha Latinos is holding its second Drag Bingo Fundraiser at MyBar on Sunday, November 2, from 3 to 7 p.m. Several of us participated in the last event, and we had a great time. Although the event is sold out online, additional tickets will be available at the door without guaranteed seating.
  • We will hold our second all-member virtual meeting on Zoom on Tuesday, November 4, at 6 p.m. Here’s the registration link. If you have questions, hit reply or type them into the chat on the call. This is an excellent opportunity for you to communicate directly with the KIND steering committee, ask us questions, and give us your feedback. You can suggest new initiatives or volunteer to help us with the campaigns we’ve started.

Thanks again for making October 18 a day to remember. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Warmest Aloha,
Sam
